The United Arab Emirates decided to start the first Arab nuclear power station in Abu Dhabi, the UAE premier tweeted.
This is a historical achievement in energy field and a milestone in the cause of sustainable development, said the premier.
The Barakah station was schedule to go into operation in late 2017, but was delayed several times for the safety consideration and regulatory requirements.
The station was constructed by a consortium led by the Korea Electric Power Corporation at a cost of $24.4 billion. In its full operation, the four nuclear reactors of the station can have a total installed capacity of 5.6 GW, meeting 25% of UAE's energy demand. At present, one of four started its fission and the remaining three reactors are ready for operation.
UAE boasts abundant oil and natural gas reserves with its proven reserves ranking seventh around the world, but it has almost 10 million populations. That's why it invests billions of dollars to develop the renewables to satisfy half of the need by 2050.
