Thailand's thermal coal (including bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) imports in February came in at 1.69 million tonnes, rising 14.34% from 1.48 million tonnes in the same month last year, customs data showed.
The figure was also 56.45% higher than 1.08 million tonnes in February, hitting the highest since September 2023, data showed.
Bituminous coal imports reached 569,700 tonnes in February, surging 68.28% on the year and 107.01% from the previous month. Imports from Australia were registered at 312,400 tonnes, rising 13.52% compared with 275,200 tonnes from a year ago; shipments from Indonesia were 178,000 tonnes, soaring 180% from 62,500 tonnes of the preceding year.
Sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 1.12 million tonnes during the same month, down 1.64% year on year yet up 39.22% month on month. Indonesia remained the largest supplier, accounting for 99.82% of Thailand's sub-bituminous imports, down 1.8% from a year earlier, while shipments from China were 1,464 tonnes, compared to zero in the same month last year.
Anthracite imports were 1,451 tonnes, soaring 2.9 times from a year ago yet falling 23.15% from a month earlier. In February, the country did not import coking coal.
Thailand's thermal coal imports stood at 2.78 million tonnes over the first two months this year, down 22.26% year on year. Bituminous coal imports came in at 844,900 tonnes, down 23.98% year on year; sub-bituminous coal imports declined 21.48% to 1.93 million tonnes.
The country's coal consumption amounted to 2.43 million tonnes in January, down 10.29% on the year, official data showed. This included 1.62 million tonnes burned by power plants, down 6.41% year on year, taking up 66.9% of the country's total coal consumption in the month.
